OP Y.
Enclosure 1.
Hon. Colonial Secretary,
19
c.o..
40012 1476
Kast 2 NOV 08,
I herewith forward a letter from Mr. Sutton,
the newly-arrived Surveyor, complaining that he finds that his
salary will be insufficient to support his wife and himself.
In preparing the requisition for a Surveyor, I considered the
salary inadequate for a married man and therefore stipulated
that the one appointed should be unmarried. This stipulation
has been disregarded.
Mr. Sutton asks for the naximum salary of
his appointment at once. There are 4 Surveyors senior to him
and their salaries are as follows:-
Mr. Grey $2,400 at 3/-........₤360
Mr. Darby (5 years' service).. 330
Mr. Reed (24 years' service).. 300
Mr. McIntosh (1 year's service)300.
If Mr. Sutton's request be granted, the
Officers mentioned must be given a corresponding increase.
On the other hand, it is unfair to retain an
Officer whose salary is insufficient to admit of his living
respectably, according to his station. Both Ir. Bolton and M~.
Mulholland have been permitted to cancel their Agreements on
these grounds.
The Survey Work is in such a condition
that it is not possible to allow Mr. Sutton to cancel his
Agreement. I submit the matter for consideration.
(sd.) T. Chatham,
5th. August, 1908.
D. P. W.
